Well, you all had a lot to say about “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” To relay about 50 emails in aggregate, 1. it has already been rewritten with extremely consensual lyrics (should have googled that, sorry. But also the new words are intolerable) and 2. it wasn’t rapey in the 40s! As the story goes, the lady in the song *wanted* to stay and made as much clear, but was beholden to the repressive culture of olden times, which is why she lingered and waffled forever. I’m not sure any of that makes the song sound less predatory in 2018, but at least now we know. Thanks, all, for writing in.
Now, in the name of moving on, please enjoy “Issues” by Shoos Off. (Hard to go out in the snow without shoes on, eh?)
Has anyone noticed how deeply the NYT is going in on merch? There’s the Bill Cunningham jacket, the nice pen set, the shirt that tells you that truth is more important than ever. Maybe you’re thinking, “wow, that hard on cash, eh?,” but you know thanks to our friend Don (coupled with a series of intelligent business moves) that the Times is doing just fine financially. The shop is actually just a great branding project. Look closer and you’ll see that lots of the items are produced in partnership with prestige brands like Kinto, Poketo, and Everybody World, signaling through merch that the Times is the prestige newspaper. And it’s on overall solid move in the age of merch-as-streetwear (remember ‘civicore‘?); the likes of Kim Jones, Frank Ocean, Justin Timberlake and Lil Uzi Vert have all worn Times pieces as fashion lately, and you can too! Truth: more stylish now than ever.
Headlines may be in the streets but money is on the runways. Yeah– take a look around fashion-fashion and you’ll see literal dollars printed on clothes (check the instas of Kara, Kota Okuda and Palomija for inspo). And, like, sure– in a time when “GoFundMe is simultaneously a healthcare system, a student loan service, and an insurance provider,” wearing money is a decent way to at least come in contact with some green.
Have you heard about Everlane’s new line made from recycled bottles? The ReNew collection is a part of a long-term company strategy to remove all new plastics from their supply chain, and the inaugural products are *nice*. The puffer coats are a rare combination of attractive and warm (make sure to check by model– obviously the fat coats are warmer than the little guys), and they come in really good colors for both men and women. And the long puffer does a really great high zip that means you don’t have to wear a scarf. Recommending these to anyone who needs a new winter coat. Shop here.
