Listen: OHFR? by Rico Nasty

For hump day, here’s a new one from Rico Nasty on all the money she’s making. If her wallet is anywhere near as heavy as this bass, she must be doing all right. Listen here.

Anyone else making it big?

After the initial stock market nosedive, the pandemic has had its winners: Zoom is obviously in the winning corner alongside Peloton, Netflix, GrubHub, etc. But all that changed slightly when Pfizer announced their vaccine. While the market rose overall at the news, Zoom and Peloton lost 17% and 20%, respectively, and Etsy dropped by 19% (so much for those homemade masks). Roku and Paypal also fell, as did remote office software companies like DocuSign and Atlassian. In their wake, in-person businesses like EventBrite (up 36%!) Lyft (21%) popped back up— all while virus cases surged in the US as they never have before. Almost makes you think the market isn’t an accurate measure of a nation’s wellbeing.

To pursue that thought further, jump into this podcast interview with Kate Raworth, an economist whose Doughnut Economics theory prioritizes people over corporations. Novel.

If the market is fine, so are the startups

All your favorite restaurants may be closing, but you know what’s not? ~The Startups.~ A while back, Erin Griffith reported that after an initial freakout in the spring, the young companies that had already established themselves pre-Covid are by and large doing fine— in part because they’re actually useful in the pandemic (see: car shares, internet stuff), but also thanks to investors who, riding the thriving stock market, continue to pour money in, boosting valuations. That’s great for them, but also let’s agree that doing business is much easier if you don’t immediately have to make money.
