Listen: A Shot In The Dark by Dos Santos

This single may be called “A Shot In The Dark,” but Dos Santos know exactly what they’re doing when they borrow musical motifs from central Mexico: their singer Alex Chavez grew up hearing huapango, a style that influences all his song-writing, even when he doesn’t say so. Please bliss out to this ASAP, and don’t miss the stop-motion video by Miguel Jara from Estudio Pneuma in Mexico City and Amara Rebel Betty Martín in Chicago.

Welcome To The Metaverse

The annoying thing about a bi-weekly publishing schedule is that by the time I have space to talk about the Facebook rebrand, it’s been like a week. But here’s the timely thought I can bring you: Does Mark barreling forth toward the metaverse not feel just a *little* like Bezos’ big penis spaceship stunt? Like, whoops, we fucked the Earth-world so hard, the only promising venture now is leaving it behind. PS You all can clean up my mess where I’m out here on the Frontier.

Anyway, Facebook’s new name could drop as soon as this week, and a lot of suggestions have been floated already. For starters:

-“The” – Eric Lach

-“Meta” – Casey Newton, who wins the prize for “most inventive”

-“Myspace” – Trevor Noah

-“Aunt Brenda’s Three-Paragraph Rant-a-torium” – Stephen Colbert

-“Oops We Facilitated Genocide” – Buzzfeed

-“The Menlo Park Website,” à la NFL – Rusty Foster

-“Ye” – Dave Pell

Meta or Uni

Not to be outdone, Jeff Bezos is reportedly building a space station called “Orbital Reef,” which he envisions as a “mixed-use business park” in space, complete with a hotel, a research station, manufacturing facilities, etc. You know, in case the South Africa thing doesn’t work out. (Or if it does!)

Some alternate names for this one, while we’re here:

-“Dick Stable”

-More delicately, “Orifice Fief”

-“!” pronounced, “the one percent”

-“Astor Place Theatre,” original home of the Blue Man Group

-“Who Needs Love Anyway”

Your suggestions welcome.
