Today, we jump back to the ’60s with Bedouine. While she’s known alternately as a folk artist and a singer-songwriter, a distinctly funky vein runs underneath her storytelling voice on “Dizzy.” She sings about insomnia and imagining other places to be, painting a bittersweet mental portrait that’s right at home on an album called “Bird Songs of a Killjoy.”
While we’re in that sonic space, also check out “Tyranny 20” by Kit Sebastian, a fuzzy noir samba about tyrants.
Will the mid-level marketers at nothing? The FDA and the FTC just had to go after essential oil companies claiming they could prevent and even cure the ‘rona. The crackdown didn’t come a moment too soon: According to a (real!) new study, people who are receptive to bullshit are also more likely to use essential oils. To come to that excellent headline, researchers asked people to interpret meaningless series of words, and those who read something profound in the nonsense were 70% more likely to use essential oils and find them effective. Next study: do essential oils work after the virus erases your sense of smell?*
*While we’re being scientifically rigorous, we still don’t know if the smell thing is really a symptom. Stay tuned.
Buzzfeed News is keeping a running list of Corona fake news, and all the best hoaxes involve animals. Those swans swimming through Venice? Not in Venice at all. (Fool me twice with the dolphins.) If you have any Nigerian princes in your life, it’s worth reading through the comprehensive list of scams, some of which are designed to take your money. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy the menagerie.
