First things first: let’s all acknowledge a sweet band name. LEGS is a group from Brooklyn that has recently physically disbanded, though they continue to put out new music from their respective homes in New York, Lima, and Seattle. The “Buddies” video, shot on the lead singer’s last night in Brooklyn before moving west, captures his reminiscent taxi ride within a wistfully sung funk jam. It’s immediately identifiable: there’s rain on the window, light refracting through drops, a lolling head blankly processing the scenery rolling by… you have taken this ride before. And to obscure the himness from the youness, a cyclical hook and some trippy camera work make for a dreamlike vibe that builds throughout. Watch now for some hump day hypnosis.

Picture this: you’re making a great salary in a new city that you still totally can’t afford. You’re dedicated to living downtown, so you opt for one of those places that’s almost a dorm but not quite. You have one room in which to do all your living– space is tight.

You may not be surprised to learn that some innovative companies have a solution for you. Multiple startups are now making robotic furniture that emerges from, and then retracts back into the ceiling and walls so that you can use your increasingly tiny space for multiple purposes throughout the day. Time to sleep? Summon bed. Dinner now? Go go gadget table! All at the push of a button! Magic, right? Well, maybe.

Let me propose a workaround: the DTC couch startup Burrow is dipping into experiential retail, and their new store (only in NYC but just wait) is effectively a just remote living room where you can sit and read, drink free coffee and tea, and watch Netflix to your heart’s desire. The idea is, naturally, to build a brand affinity this way and hope for Snake People* to turn to Burrow when they eventually need a couch. But what’s stopping you from just using theirs on the reg? If you choose to take full advantage, you will, of course, be in public as you do your lounging, but at least you won’t have to clean up after yourself. So maybe nix ‘common area’ from your list of residential must-haves– who needs personal space anyway?
