Skip Politics

Listen: Pesto by Wiki

Sometimes an intermediary isn’t what you want. That’s what Wiki learned  as a small fish at XL next to giants like Adele and Tyler, the Creator. So he left the label and he’s just put out his first record since striking out on his own. OOFIE is full of insidious beats sweet names like “Pesto,” a bravado track anchored by a tinny, jabby beat. Perhaps thanks to all the cash he’s saving by going solo, he raps that he’s rolling in green, but he doesn’t have to tell us that—the whole video is washed in green light so that beers look like Saint Patricks Day and New York looks like the apocalypse. Are we jealous, or that an effect, too?

Skip Politics

Seth Myers had a big idea for his Netflix special: a “Skip Politics” button. In theory, it’s “a way to build in the response to anyone who would say, ‘Oh, let me guess there’s going to be jokes about the President.” In practice, it works just like skipping the opening credits. Which is fine, but they might have given us more buttons to fast forward through other skippable content. A “Skip Patriarchy” button, for example, would have been nice during all the wife jokes, during which “My Wife” demonstrates universal female expectations like proposals in Paris and, following those proposals, ultimate wedding planning authority. Seth’s Wife truly is a wonder, though; she accomplishes all this (and gives birth to a baby in a lobby!) without ever getting a name, though the doormen, Ramon & Kevin—and seemingly everybody else— get credits as soon as they appear. Wife guy indeed.

Skip trolling

This feels like a good time to bring up Andrew Ferguson’s Atlantic article, “Can Marriage Counseling Save America?” It looks at Better Angels, “a citizens’ organization uniting red and blue Americans in a working alliance to depolarize America,” wondering whether across-the-aisle facilitation is actually any help. TL;DR: kinda maybe? As it turns out, people at these workshops always discover more in common than they expected, which is nice and validating and fuzzy. Still, there’s no research yet on whether those talks have any lasting effect, and even if they did, participants are self-selecting. Read the full article for an exhilarating ride, or save the time and volunteer for a cause you care about. Which one of these will move the needle…
