Listen: Overstand by Apifera

Are you in nature today? Or are you in the “I wish” category? If the latter, please allow Apifera to bring you outside. On “Overstand,” the Israeli experimental group uses a kind of psychedelic, woodsy jazz to evoke nature’s equilibrium. Written largely on the fly over the course of three days (that is to say, “improvised”), the album is a kind of rambling rove that, at present, you can really only experience in solitude or in your imagination. Thanks to these guys for bottling the feeling.

ONE Microcovid, TWO Microcovids…

If the stakes weren’t so dire, watching roommates haggle over Covid risk would make for great comedy. “You took an UBER?!” “How many windows are in her house and will they be open.” “Well, if you’re gonna date, then I get to have a new friend over every week.”

After months of reasoned discussion that led nowhere, one group of San Francisco housemates decided to develop a tool that calculates the actual risk levels of every conceivable activity, based on what we know about exposure levels and rates of infection. Thanks to their indulgence in the roommatiest activity ever (besides maybe divvying up and nametagging individual wedges of cheese), this house now knows exactly how many “Microcovids” they’re spending when they go on walks, take mass transit, and— shhhh— kiss their dates. While it does require logging daily plans with their corresponding risk level in a communal spreadsheet (tiresome), they’ve found freedom in their super concrete mode of keeping the peace.*

*Dear elected officials, it’s that easy.

What about dating a vaccinated person

On that note, people are, in logical yet disorienting fashion, starting to list their vaccine status on their dating app profiles, a move for which I see one primary drawback and one great opportunity. The hesitation: How do you trust anyone when they say they’re immune? And the light: What if we’re normalizing disclosure of all sorts?
