Bow down to Khajda Bonet, a funky soul goddess behind the new album “Childqueen.” It’s an extremely retro experience, funky, soulful, by turns technicolor and dusty, all an autobiographical exploration of power. In her meandering serenades, Bonet revers the female body and its extraordinary abilities, particularly on “Mother Maybe,” which is an all about the mother she may eventually become and her own ability to create. Which, by the way, is already supreme: she wrote, played and produced every part of this album with the exception of a few bass lines. Again: queen.
Comme Des Garçons was real cool at their runway show in a few weeks ago, showing clothes that were heavy and bulbous, to expose the load women bear, with some pieces even shackled in chains. Pants were splashed with newspaper print, and one armorlike outfit broke in the center to expose a pregnant belly. The (female) designer Rei Kawakubo says the line was designed to amplify the previously concealed truths that are coming out of women now– a productive rumination from the brand whose name translates to “like the boys.”
Just a PSA in case Rihanna starts carrying one and theres’ a mad rush.
