Hey good morning, hope everyone had a good weekend. Quick note on last Friday’s feature on PWR BTTM: What many of you knew and I did not is that their singer has some pretty serious sexual assault allegations against him. If I’d known I wouldn’t have promoted his work, and want to thank everyone who wrote in to tell me. A good friend of mine summed it up well: “It’s crazy these days how easy it is to promote someone you don’t know has allegations.” And Martin wrote in to say, “You can tell people to listen to IDLES who promote positivity & unity through rage and all will be good again.” Their sound is a pretty distinct departure from anything you’ve heard in here before, but maybe the rage is cathartic. Try it.
And in response to last week’s dairy articles, Naz, who runs a food conference called Bitten (you should all go, last year’s was fantastic), shared this one with me. Here’s the quick version: Chugging milk by the jugful, white supremacists are celebrating a gene they believe to run in European blood that enables them to digest lactose. And that’s not the extent of the story, I’m afraid; they’re selectively interpreting other scientific research to support racist claims about things like intellectual ability. So now the science establishment is having to figure out how to protect real research from bogus misinterpretations. Ugh.
Last week I met the women making the podcast “Women Belong in the House,” which interviews female Congressional candidates. Do you want to get to know them? Take a listen. They’ll be powering through episodes til the Midterms.
If you’re into any of the candidates you meet on the pod, go to their websites and sign up to phone or text bank for them (you can also do this for other, non-Congressional candidates). You can also find lots of ways to volunteer through Sister District, or write postcards to voters about why they should support Democratic candidates in key races. Or, of course, donate.
