No news, just beef

November 6, 2020

Listen: Music for Silence by Nick Murphy

Who needs more stimulus? Not you. Please enjoy these 13 minutes of ambient piano from the artist formerly known as Chet Faker. And if that does something for you, dip into the rest of his meditation album. Phew.

No news, just beef

I’ll be honest: planning this issue was tough. What could I say that would be relevant no matter what development appeared over night? Not to mention, who wants any news this week that isn’t a clear result?

Nobody, that’s who, and that’s why I’ll keep it brief with this twitter thread containing a slice of prime beef between Nate Silver and Nikole Hannah-Jones. First, NHJ tweeted what you see above in the run-up to election day.

And then on November 4, she added:

This is the world’s sexiest pollster putting down his pen after grueling months of trying to predict the election for all the libs who can’t tear themselves away from the news. And America’s great civil rights journalist balking at the idea that ~the polls~ might be what we’re concerned about.

Yes, we want to win the election. But for some (dare I say the most privileged?), it’s about numbers, and for others, it’s about people— and no matter how accurate those numbers end up being, people are still living with a far right wielding arms; with a virus that disproportionately affects those who are already disenfranchised; with an electorate for half of whom racism is ok if it means they might prosper financially.

The work was not done on November 1, it’s not done now, and it won’t be done next week. (Except maybe for pollsters, who have now majorly misjudged twice in a row.)

Stacey Abrams is the real MVP

Let’s hear it for Stacey, who did NOT chill out starting November 1, but rather guided the people of Georgia through their state’s endless hoops of voter suppression on a level that will potentially swing a state that hasn’t gone left in 28 years. From Vogue: “Abrams and Fair Fight registered a staggering estimated 800,000 new voters since 2018 and helped squash suppressive policies like “exact match,” which had required registrations to precisely match voters’ licenses down to the hyphen, or else risk being tossed out. Abrams told NPR on November 2: “45% of those new voters are under the age of 30. 49% are people of color. And all 800,000 came on the rolls after November ’18.” THAT is how it’s done.

A propos of none of this (but still enticing) $

Here’s a word from Wise Bread, a company that analyzes the best credit cards for different lifestyles. They’ve found a card that gets you an extreme amount of cash back. You get a $200 signup bonus if you spend $1,000 on it in your first 90 days, then 3% cash back on online shopping, drug stores, travel, dining, home improvement and furniture, or gas. No annual fee and 0% intro APR on purchases for 12 months. Check it out here.

In hindsight, maybe I shouldn’t have programmed an ad for today. I also used the words, “for half of whom.” This week, we extend ourselves some forgiveness.
