Nature-adjacent

Listen: The Sun Won’t Shine On Me by Teenage Fanclub

Despite being the shining star of their new album, this song from the aging Scottish pop mainstay Teenage Fanclub feels like it might have debuted at Woodstock. It’s got that hazy, vintage Crosby, Stills & Nash vibe, with a harpsichord undergirding folksy vocals that refract in tension halfway through the chorus. It’s a waltz for lovesick wandering, and it’s catchy as all get out. Play it on loop, you won’t regret it.

Hey nice tree

While you were taking endless walks around your neighborhood this year, latching onto every green thing for solace, it appears that a number of obnoxiously wealthy individuals were trolling the suburbs for excellent trees to dig up, cut up, and transplant onto their extravagant properties for show. According to the WSJ (who else), full-grown trophy trees are the new mansion showpiece, perhaps because everyone loves nature now but more likely because of the prestige of how difficult it is to move a hundred-year-old tree. You have to slice it into pieces, put it on a barge or a truck or a helicopter, and hope that it doesn’t die in the period after you’ve paid $200,000 and before it’s reassembled in its new home with a variety of internal beams. This is fascinating and all, but what I really want is an article about the people who sold their trees, telling us what it’s like to be approached by a person who feels entitled to everything, including incidental pieces of the outdoors.

How about that bark

For the rest of us, I hear brown is back in fashion? Like, we learned to love nature but now we can be in the city again so this is our compromise. Unclear how long this will last (watch Tik Tok for cues), but if you hop on the trend, you can at least infiltrate some fancy houses disguised as a tree trunk. You know who to call with the debrief.
