Keto Burrito (that just rhymes, you don’t get to have a burrito)

Listen: Body Love by IDER

Praise the music Gods for all the SXSW reporting this week. In classic Bob Boylan style, NPR added IDER to their Austin 100 list (Bob sure loves a female indie-folk singer– see NPR’s love afair with Overcoats), and they’re pretty interesting. IDER is another lady duo, British this time, and they’re kind of like an updated version of…. let’s say… track #6 on the soundtrack you turned on for a good zone-out drive in high school. Their floaty electropop stays relevant with jagged rhythms and–you guessed it– Overcoats-style harmony with a bunch of wonky fourths. But there are also some nice dissonances in there, softness… this is a real song, worth an attentive listen; there’s a lot to notice, and it’ll also be good for easing out of the week. So… Do it.

So suddenly everyone’s keto?

All right, what is the deal with the keto diet? (It’s ‘Ketogenic’, for those of us who prefer to speak in full words– all about ketosis, a state where your body burns your fat for energy because it’s so low on carbohydrates.) As far as I know it’s just the new Atkins, both in form and function: everyone’s doing it and the rules are pretty much the same. Major difference is that the keto diet is even higher in fat. I guess a little rebrand never hurts? Also, keto sounds very *science*. For verification, word from friends at Expo West, the big natural foods expo that just went down in LA, is that like every other company exhibiting is on the keto swing. So… maybe you should be too? (You shouldn’t.)

But who’s actually using CBD?

Across the expo floor, CBD products are holding their own. Actually there was a whole full-day CBD summit at Expo West, looking into legality and scale of non-high-inducing, hemp-derived cannabidiol. But here’s a little conundrum for you: aside from dabbling with free tinctures from expos, I don’t know anyone who’s actively using CBD products, do you? Which makes you wonder if CBD is 1. used more for medical conditions, or 2. more of an exciting stopgap for industry people who are waiting for the rest of the plant to get legal. Thoughts?
