We the Unhoused
Dunno how versed you are in the media goss, but in the wake of last year’s acquisition, Vox’s Curbed is now sitting stylishly under New York Magazine. One of the first pieces under the new logo is on Theo Henderson, a former teacher whose recession-era job loss and medical debt forced him out of his Los Angeles home. He’s been living mostly in a park since 2013, and in that time has become a vocal commentator on local housing policy— most recently through his interview podcast, We The Unhoused. As you might expect, Covid has been a time for the unhoused community, and Henderson captures the action on the ground: One interview reveals the many failures of the program designed to accommodate homeless people in LA’s empty hotel rooms. Virtually every conversation reveals the work of unhoused life, which is a constant quest for bathrooms and storage with NIMBYs and the LAPD as regular obstacles. Listen and learn, and contribute to Henderson’s Patreon if you’re able.
True democracy
You know who should really fund Henderson’s podcast? Spencer Rascoff, Zillow’s old CEO who stepped down last year to “democratize second home ownership.” Take your time with that tagline. When you’re done: With the new venture, Pacaso, you can sign up for 1/8 to 1/2 ownership in a high-end vacation property sourced and listed by the company, entering into an LLC with your co-owners. Pacaso deals with interior design, home repairs, bill paying and property management, and they give you an app to schedule your time. What we will certainly not call a TIME SHARE seems like the pandemic-time answer to Airbnb: consistent access to elsewhere with limited variables involved. The company is backed by $17M in Series A funding (democratically sourced, to be sure*), which Rascoff may not even quite need, as he is a venture capitalist himself. (Another pet project of his is a blank-check company intended to bring some unicorn public.) So I suppose he’s less interested in democratizing access to first homes?
