Give me a hand

Listen: The Handshake by MGMT

Quick throwback to 2007 when MGMT released The Handshake, all about their reservations on signing with Columbia Records. It’s kind of the classic rock version of MGMT, with a narrative structure that creates a story, without forgetting their electronic fabric and falsetto octave parallels. And when you put it that way, it comes to light that these guys aren’t dissimilar to Bowie. All the more reason to turn back up ten years later.

Hands, please

While I don’t really exist in the memeverse, I’m told this hand theme is blowing up. Basically just a venn diagram leveled up, this kind of image paints two people as comically different types, then brings them together with a common interest, labeled on their joined hands. Now, memers gonna meme, but the elephant in the room here is that evidently we think agreement between different people is ~hilarious~. Don’t be surprised if the ethnographers slap us with this one in 100 years.

As if on cue

In the new season of Internetting with Amanda Hess, the very smart internet culture video series from the Times, there’s a whole episode about hands! Watch it for Amanda’s explanation of the online hand proliferation, but here’s my takeaway. Buzzfeed and YouTube have built massive businesses on videos of just hands doing things: cooking, crafting, building, decorating… and watching them makes us feel like those could be our capable hands, too (“vicarious competence,” says Hess). And all that is a huge relief in light of social platforms’ demands that we display our perfect faces at all times. So to paraphrase this whole thing in the words of my favorite gym instructor, “it’s not about what you look like; it’s what you can do.”

A thought on what to do with your own hands image (so on-trend). $
