I’ve said this before and I’m saying it again: a bright spot of the warm months in NYC has been musicians playing jazz in parks, on stoops and sidewalks, really anywhere people gather outside. These shows have a way of filling your heart and breaking it at the same time, once you remember that with venues closed and tours cancelled, this is pretty much the only way for musicians to make money right now. For the New York Times, I’ve been cataloguing the outdoor gigs and the organizers behind them, and my piece went up this weekend with some deeply charming videos shot by Brittainy Newman. Read all about the pandemic-time jazz and feel some warm-and-fuzzies (promise).

Ghost Chipotle
Moving on to food: To be honest, I haven’t paid much mind to the ghost kitchen thing, mostly because who cares if David Chang is making sandwiches where I can’t see him. (If you’re reaching for your dictionary, a ghost kitchen is a restaurant back-of-house with no front— branded food made explicitly for delivery.) But Chipotle’s first digital-only “location” snapped it all into focus: if some Chipotles are only online, that means they’re not taking up real estate, which means your block can be full of local businesses and not chain restaurants. That still comes with its own issues (those attached to the instant gratification of ordering with two taps may still not hit up your local burrito joint) but we’ll take our silver lining and run with it.
Other upside: ice cream
Evidently Unilever has also been working hard behind the scenes to make sure you’re never more than a tap away from ice cream. The company handling five of the world’s top-grossing ice cream brands (Breyers, Carte d’Or and Ben & Jerry’s, to name a few), has been piloting a delivery service since 2016— and in 2020, Ice Cream Now is taking off fast. With the cooperation of grocery stores and delivery partners, Unilever can deliver pints, tubs, and bars within 30 minutes— a logistical marvel that has quadrupled in popularity (and expanded in reach) since the beginning of the pandemic. Seems like they could teach Pfizer a thing or two.
I know you’re making coffee at home. $
Does that Chipotle image look like a mouse trap to anyone else? (It’s actually a phone— same difference.)
