Listen: Take It Back by Emily Ritz

You know those people who just seem like complete packages? I saw Emily Ritz open for Mike Rosen’s spoken word show last night (which you can hear here, if you want some smart words in your day (you do)) and she was delightful. Emily embodies her music in a way that most artists don’t, from the dimensions of her haircut to the shape her mouth makes when she’s singing certain syllables– it just feels like the music is coming out of the ideal vessel. Her voice is soft but directed, and she’s worked out how to make complex arrangements out of just her voice and a guitar (and, on recordings, some cool production). Oh, and did I mention she’s a visual artist too? There’s not a ton of her music on the internet but she’s dropping an album in about a month, so keep an eye out, and then catch her on tour anywhere from Brooklyn to Joshua Tree.

Working at Hooters

Great news: you can now use your local Hooters as a coworking* space. They’ve joined up with one of those startups that opens empty restaurants to freelancers during the day, helping all your regressive fantasies come to life. Unfortunately, the only participating location is in Tokyo, but in the name of accessibility, students get in free. Where do we sign up?

*’coworking’ autocorrects to ‘cowering’

Living at Marine Layer

Elsewhere in the realm of alternative space use, Marine Layer has been renting out ML-branded airbnbs: basically high-aesthetic apartments near their retail stores, where you can fully live the Marine Layer brand. They swear it’s not for money and their retail business is thriving, and I think you should believe them in the way you believe your high school friend moved back home ‘for a break from the city’. Hush up and leave them their dignity.

And now put your dollars to work.

Help Marine Layer out so they can stop renting out their bedroom. Here’s the most expensive item I could find on their site; think of it like a crowdfunding campaign where you get a reward that’s almost commensurate with your contribution.

Hahahah no but actually if you’re going to buy anything today you should make it Emily Ritz’s merch. It doesn’t seem like she’s put the hats and stuff that she designed on her website yet (will alert you when she does, they’re sweet), but she did make a coloring book that’s pretty classy. Take a look.

Just livin’ the brand out here,
Margot

PS that shoe giveaway is still up and you could win a lot of them– see here.
