But first, coffee

Listen: Déjà Vu by SOAK

SOAK is a singer-songwriter who got a little bit famous, found a producer, and now makes pop. Compelling pop, even. The third single off her new album, “Déjà Vu,” is a dark worry about a person who may not be ok, wrapped up in a cutesy chorus and “a looping, nonsensical, Lynchian dream” of a video. See how you like it, and maybe grab tickets to a show; SOAK is extremely on tour.

$5: Not just for foot-longs

The fast food-verse has been in a breakfast war for years. Remember McGriddles? How about the Taco Bell Breakfast Crunchwrap? I don’t even know what Burger King serves for breakfast but they have just unequivocally won mornings with their new coffee subscription. For $5 a month you get a cup of coffee every day, which seems laughable next to a single craft cup of the same price. Obviously the idea is that you’ll impulse-buy the occasional breakfast alongside, but still. How could you refuse?

A less impressive subscription

Headline of the week goes to Deadspin for “Netflix’s Bright Future Looks A Lot Like Television’s Dim Past.” It seemed like it was going to be an article about how you have to subscribe to every streaming platform to see the shows you want, thereby paying the same as you would for cable. Instead, it spends a great deal of time dragging Netflix original programming, pointing out how forgettable shows are when they’re made to grab you with the algorithmic logic of what “people who bought this also bought.” A delightful bit of journalistic fire, even if you are enjoying Sex Education.

Be prepared

A nice tumbler for all your near-free coffee. Might keep you up for more Netflix too. Win-win.

What’s the update on Schultz 2020?
