Bring it home

Listen: It Is What It Is by Thundercat

If you haven’t already jumped into the new Thundercat album, let it be a present that you unwrap throughout today. The work is about mourning Mac Miller, a close friend of Thundercat’s, and I can’t think of a better guide to grief. A fitting mantra for the moment, It Is What It Is processes loss through Bruner’s classically joyous psychedelic funk. Leave it to Thundercat to create light in the dark.

Time to make peace with bad hair

Are you one of the many people stuck at home needing a haircut? It might bring you comfort to imagine we’re all in this bad hair situation together, but there are still a few people getting it done. The Washington Post reported on a set of underground barbers, hairdressers and nail techs making house calls to keep their clients looking proper— some to pay the bills, and others to help their communities maintain a sense of normalcy. Appearances aside, this kind of close contact seems like exactly what the stimulus bill was designed to prevent. It’s also a perfect application for the phrase, “patience is a virtue.” Resist the urge to take house calls, friends, and it’s probably best if you don’t cut your own hair either.

Home births are IN

One thing that can’t wait? Labor. As hospitals become increasingly devoted to one cause, more expecting mothers are leaning toward home births. But that still means welcoming someone into your house. According to one midwife in Brooklyn, her practice “had more inquiries in one day this week than we had in an entire year.” Demand is so high that midwives and doulas are having to turn clients away— both because their schedules are overwhelmed, and because, like everyone, they’re running low on PPE. Generation C is really earning its name.

Back on hair $

While you wait for that sweet, sweet haircut, you’ll want to use the right shampoo. On that note, let me introduce New Wash, a shampoo alternative from Hairstory. As you may know, the detergents in shampoo strip away the oils in your hair, good and bad, which makes your scalp over-produce oil, leaving you dependent on more shampoo. New Wash cleans without detergent, only removing excess oil, dirt and styling products to keep your scalp healthy. Learn more here.

Deep breaths,

Margot

PS After Friday’s issue, my friend Dan at Edible Schoolyard passed along a discount code for Baldor— use ESYNYC10 for 10% off through April 12th. On that note, Edible Schoolyard, which does food education for kids in New York public schools, had to cancel their gala due to Covid, which has eliminated a lot of their funding for the year. While you get your discount, consider donating to them if you can.
