Best of 2018

Happy new year, everyone! How are we feeling? Are we Whole30ing? Making resolutions?

The year in media closed out with a million and one best-of-2018 lists, which is a fun exercise when you’ve been putting out content all year. Inspired and late, I took an audit over the break of the top Lorem stories from last year and made a list based on the things you all clicked on the most. (It’s a biased metric, since sometimes I tell you to click on things, but it’s informative and also the easiest to count.) It’s pretty fun to learn about yourself this way– you are what you read and all– and now we get to do it as a group.

So in the name of learning from our mistakes– er, uh, our past (which is a thing 2018 was generally bad at), I present to you the stories that got you going most in the last year.

In no particular order:

On hating Burning Man

And loving public libraries

Doja Cat (under 60 but we’ll take it)
Scobies (consensus: they’re gross!)
The Pynk video (would be disappointed if this wasn’t on the list)
DIY Halo Top (may I suggest air)
Powdered liquor (a thing you sneak into a gated wellness community)
Kev Nemelka’s annual best-of music mag, which I finally got my act together to contribute to this year. Keep an eye out in Jan.
Man Of The Woods, its own freestanding punchline.

So what did we learn?

-Media borders are eroding (they should just award EGOTs in one go)
-Rich folks gonna rich
-Everyone else: Do it your damn self
-Representation 👏 works 👏
-Private money might be out for your public utilities. You decide if that’s a good
thing. (read: Iz Bezos Ur Friend)
-Gay is okay! (TY, J. Monáe 🌷)
-Anything can be good for you if you just imagine ✨
-Justin Timberlake is more a man of the Mickey Mouse club. And your livestock-raising CEO friend is likely not a man of the woods either.

One last fun fact from Lorem in 2018 is the rate at which autocorrect transformed scobies into ‘scabies’ and coworking into ‘cowering.’ Here’s to less cowering in 2019.
