Listen: Heels by Sir Babygirl

Got your soundtrack for the week and it’s every song produced by Sir Babygirl, a nonbinary pop goddess who’s just starting to come up. They were a regular musician before they turned to pop, but the genre suits them– channeling all the 90s icons (Britney Spears, Helga Pitaki) into a highly cultivated persona, they breathe and shriek life into the structure of pop songs. There’s some punk rock in there, some indie-something, and a whole lot of energy. Monday: commence.

Period tracking apps are not for women

You knew consumer tech was screwing you over, but did you know all the ways? A great article from The Goods just fast-tracked the realization that period tracking apps really aren’t for the people who use them. Think about it: you input all your personal data (what’s your mood? did you exercise today? are you having trouble sleeping?) and get… maybe some visibility into high-level patterns at best? And, chances are your app isn’t able to process when you get pregnant or have an abortion. On the other end, the (largely male) producers of these apps get aggregate data on you and every other digital menstruator, which they will probably share with marketers and medical companies so you can buy your way out of the data patterns that you reported for free. But hey, at least you can’t get pregnant when you get fucked by a tech company.

Androgyny to the rescue

A bright light after that downer: MEL, the remarkably good men’s magazine that’s quietly published by Dollar Shave Club, just put out a piece about the social benefits of psychological androgyny. What is it? Distinct from the time-honored traditions of ladies wearing blazers and men wearing eyeliner, it’s more about channeling a spectrum of gendered sensibilities in how you interact with the world, rather than keeping on your socially conditioned masc/femininity blinders. According to a study in Scientific American, being psychologically androgenous makes people more successful, particularly because it increases the ability to empathize. And women are reportedly better at channeling andro than men, who have statistically made no progress in bridging the psychological gender gap. But… what’s the saying? Boys will be boys?

The most literal

There’s one South Korean fashion brand taking androgyny to its literal heights with the name “Agender.” Twee as the name may be, their stuff is not half bad. Check them out for some winter staples.

Genius.
