Spotlight on Lotic
Clearly Lotic is compelled by rhythm-- some of his sounds are nothing but-- and in true Berlin style, many of his sonic elements are metallic, electric, industrial, almost like if a fairy broke into a rave. Most of his tracks adhere to the experimental sound-as-music rule, but he also draws occasionally from R&B, and therein lies his story: Lotic, or J'Kerian Morgan, is from Houston. He decided to peace out to Germany when he graduated from school in 2012, got a dream job working for Ableton (*the* sound production software, if you don’t know), and has been DJing the shit out of Berlin for the last five years. He built his base with two partners through a monthly party called Janus; now he’s graduated and signed, and he dropped an EP, Heterocetera, in 2015. More recently, he’s gotten some attention for his Beyoncé remix, entitled FORMATION (ELECTION ANXIETY/AMERICA IS OVER EDIT). Choosing not to be too bogged down by political depression, let’s all take a second for a good giggle as we imagine the Berlin DJ expat intoning, ‘America is over.’ We’ll see how over America is when Cardi B takes the stage after Lotic at this Saturday’s Warmup.
