A better place

Listen: Better Place by Godford

Every so often, a totally vanilla rock song can hit, and this schtick by Godford is one of those. Its four romantic chords repeat on such a tight rotation that they end up putting you in a house-like trance, which must be what we mean by a “Better Place.” Listen here— or if you want something weirder today, dip into Oneohtrix Point Never’s bizarro “Long Road Home,” both overtly electro and satisfactorily complex.

Step into my pantry

I know you can’t see my face, but please imagine my expression as I tell you that in the age of Covid, people who have the freedom of renovation are rapidly adding walk-in pantries to their houses—a move that’s as much about stockpiling as it is for the ‘gram. Imagine if the Facebook office kitchen made its way into a McMansion via the Fab Five*: neutral backgrounds serve as a foundation for neat stacks of labeled bean-and-grain containers alongside shelves and shelves of canned salsa, salad dressing, and single-serve packs of peanut butter— all visible, accessible, and laid out as if the pantrygoer is a guest. We trace this development to Chrissy Tiegen, of course, who presciently began posting about her laboriously organized food collection in February. That was fine and relatively faultless— she is a celebrity with a cookbook, after all. Where the eyes start to roll is after February, when everyone else’s glam pantry started to appear in feeds alongside community fridges, which nowadays are showing up empty. All of which is to say, I know my local mutual aid group is still taking donations and I bet yours is, too.

*Ok, just Bobby.

But stay out of my house

The other new Covid house amenity is, naturally, a tent for visitors who need to be kept out of the pantry area for general virus safety. Kid tested negative but couldn’t fully isolate in the run-up to Xmas? Tent. Remote-working grownup visiting a bunch of school-going kids? Tent. Multiple siblings showing up from different cities? Maybe several tents. I’ve been suggesting this to friends for months and no one has taken me up on it, but evidently it’s working for some people because there’s now a whole tent-guestroom feature in the Styles section. Anyway, I look forward to this sticking as a polite way to take in house guests in the post-vaccine future. My, how hardy we’re becoming.

A tremendous house gift $

If you’re visiting via tent or pantry or both, it’s nice to bring a little something to share. In my experience, tasty coffee is a pretty surefire hit, and for that purpose, Atlas Coffee Club has you covered. Right now, they’re offering $10 off your first bag when you sign up, so you can either gift one of your own bags or send your fam a few months’ worth of beans (or more!). You can tell them they’ll be getting a new hand-picked microlot coffee each month from one of  50+ countries around the globe (so far, I’ve tried their coffees from Guatemala, Rwanda, and Brazil), always sourced from farmers who are paid above market rate to support sustainable farming techniques. Oh, and hot tip: Atlas has a holiday sale happening now, so you can also take up to $50 off all coffee gifts. Get your coffee needs sorted here— and, I hope, enjoy the fruits of your generosity over a shared cup.

Holiday planning: nothing short of intents.
