Listen: The Greatest by Lana del Rey

Happy Monday, now please enjoy this song about burnout. On “The Greatest,” Lana del Rey uses her classic vintage melancholy to lament everything that used to be: the environment, rock and roll, good Kanye… she “want[s] shit to feel just like it used to,” only it never will. Considering the *ahem* climate, pining for the past feels particularly poignant, and it’s not clear whether this is a new page in the Lana book, or if we can just identify with her wistful feelings more than before. In any case, the song’s dusty, swelling orchestration makes for a beauty of a bummer; at least we’re going out on a high note.

NYMag, it’s been real

A media bombshell hit last week when Vox bought New York Media (and all of its brands: New York Mag, The Cut, Vulture, etc). And then before the rubble even settled, Vice bought Refinery29. It’s a troubling time in media, as we know (thanks, google and facebook), and it’s been said that companies need to “team up” to stay afloat since more eyeballs = heftier ad revenue. But what happens when brands with such distinct personalities come together? Is The Cut is going to start explaining things to us? Will Vice make listicles about makeup? Watch this space. And by this space, I mean those spaces. They could use your readership, evidently.

That’s not all in merger town

So, you know the little advertorial stories at the bottom of news sites? The two companies that serve those are “teaming up” too. They’re calling it a merger, but effectively, Taboola is buying Outbrain, not because anyone is struggling—they’re both profitable—but because they can accrue more buying power together. Which is exactly why we’re trying to break up the big tech guys, right? Senator Warren, please weigh in.

And our closing team

In an actual team-up that involves no companies buying each other, the Star Wars franchise appears to be collaborating with Le Creuset on a line of cookware. Why? No one knows, but the promotional materials are pretty unreal (do yourself a favor and watch the video).

While we’re on dutch ovens, though, did you see that Food52 just sold a majority stake to the Chernin Group? This one’s a success story: $83 million, suckaaas.

How about a reality TV show called Merger Mania? Anyone?
