So, the new Lion King may not be good, but Beyoncé’s “songs inspired” by it sure are. On her companion album, The Gift, she spotlights artists from around Africa, though curiously none from Kenya, where The Lion King is set. So, make sure to get into My Power by Tierra Whack, which *is* about lions but is also a banger. Then do a little proactive Kenyan listening with Muthoni Drummer Queen.
Legal in California
July 28, 2019
BYO takeout
In classic California style, the golden state just passed a bill allowing people to bring their own tupperware to restaurants instead of taking single-use containers (yes, there are sanitation provisions in order, namely, no putting customers’ containers on kitchen surfaces). The plan will of course cut down on takeout plastic waste, and also make for some super entertaining container scoping. Bring it on, CA, we’ll be casually watching the takeout line. (Also this.)
New drug frontiers too
This is happening on a smaller scale, but still: this spring, Oakland* decriminalized magic mushrooms and ayahuasca. There’s still no way to get either one legally, but that could be temporary. Drugs like these have been proven to treat anxiety and other mental health issues effectively, and California does have this nice history of opening doors to medicinal plants. So… maybe channel legalization on your next trip?
*Denver just decriminalized mushrooms, too.
