Listen: Truth by Mark Ronson, ft. Alicia Keys and The Last Artful, Dodgr

Mark Ronson’s “Truth” is an anthem to staying woke. Between irresistible hooks, Alicia Keys and The Last Artful, Dodgr sing, “Oh, keep on educatin’, meditatin’, anything to keep me up,” moving on to rail on “activists” who are all talk, and energizing listeners to get up and act. It doesn’t hit you over the head, though– if you don’t listen too hard, you mostly come away with the line, “keep me uplifted,” and it’s easy to get lost in the bop. You know what that makes this song? A crowdpleaser.

UK Bans Gender Stereotypes in Advertising

For all the things they’re sucking at (namely, exiting the E.U.), the UK is racking up some wins. A few months ago they made that hero move in declaring a climate emergency, and in more recent news, they’ve banned gender stereotypes in advertising. Under the new rules, people can’t be depicted “failing to achieve a task specifically because of their gender” or displaying “stereotypical personality traits,” and ads can’t suggest that women “should prioritize their looks or home cleanliness over their emotional health” (zinggg).  BRAVO on the rule, and good luck fighting with every major corporation over what constitutes a stereotype.

But gender is so fun

Meanwhile in America, Snapchat has been singlehandedly resurrected by its gender swap filter– it’s been so virally fun that the app’s download rate roughly tripled after its release. Shareholders are rejoicing, but it’s probably a one-hit wonder– it’s the filter that’s fun, not the whole app.

Swimming also fun

Rachel Berks, the owner of Otherwild, recently pointed out that we need more gender-nonconforming swimwear options. And, surprise, she has the solution. Otherwild just launched Hirsuit, a line of unitard-style swimsuits with chest support that look good on, dare I say, everybody. They’re also reversible and have POCKETS. Shows more commitment than rainbow Nikes, doesn’t it?

Happy Pride,

Margot
